In 1939, World War II broke out, and Bushell was deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force. He was captured by the Germans in May 1940, and he was imprisoned at Stalag Luft III, a POW camp in Poland. Despite the harsh conditions, Bushell refused to give up hope. He organized a group of prisoners and began planning a daring escape attempt.
The escape attempt, which became known as the Great Escape, was one of the most daring and ambitious POW escapes of all time. Bushell and his team dug a 300-foot tunnel under the camp fence. On the night of March 24, 1944, 76 prisoners escaped through the tunnel. However, only 23 of the escapees managed to evade capture, and Bushell was one of the 50 who were recaptured.
Bushell was interrogated and tortured by the Gestapo. He refused to give up any information about the escape, and he was eventually executed by firing squad on September 29, 1944. He was 34 years old.
