Eric Gill By Fiona MacCarthy Eric Gill Fiona MacCarthy

Eric Gill was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. A master of many media, he produced sculptures, drawings, prints, and typography that are still admired today. This stunningly illustrated biography by Fiona MacCarthy tells the story of Gill's life and work, from his early days as a stonemason to his later years as a controversial figure.

Gill was born in Brighton, England, in 1882. He showed an early talent for art, and at the age of 16 he was apprenticed to a stonemason. After completing his apprenticeship, Gill worked as a stonemason for several years before moving to London to study at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.

In London, Gill came into contact with the avant-garde art scene. He was particularly influenced by the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement. Gill's own work began to reflect the influence of these movements, and he soon became known for his simple, geometric designs.

In 1907, Gill married the artist Mary Ethel Frost. The couple had three children. Gill continued to produce art throughout his life, and he also taught at several schools. In 1924, he founded the Ditchling Press, a private press that produced fine editions of books.

Gill's work was often controversial. He was a devout Catholic, and his art often reflected his religious beliefs. His work was also criticized for its eroticism. However, Gill's work has also been praised for its beauty and originality. He is considered one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Fiona MacCarthy's biography of Eric Gill is a fascinating and insightful look at the life and work of this complex and influential artist. The book is beautifully illustrated with over 200 images, and it includes a detailed chronology of Gill's life and work.
