Memoirs Of Red Guard: American Lives On The Front Lines Of The Chinese Cultural Revolution Gang Of One: Memoirs Of A Red Guard (American Lives)

By Xiaobo Lu

In the midst of the chaos and violence of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, a group of American citizens found themselves on the front lines. They were the children of diplomats, missionaries, and businesspeople who had been living in China for years. When the Red Guard movement swept the country, these Americans were caught in the middle, forced to navigate a world that was suddenly turned upside down.

In Memoirs of Red Guard: American Lives on the Front Lines of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Xiaobo Lu tells the stories of these Americans. Through firsthand interviews, Lu reveals the complexities of this tumultuous period in Chinese history and its lasting impact on the lives of those who experienced it.

Lu's subjects come from a variety of backgrounds. There is Robert Burke, the son of a diplomat who was imprisoned by the Red Guard for two years. There is Nancy Tang, a Chinese-American student who was forced to denounce her own parents. And there is John Kamm, a businessman who risked his life to help Chinese dissidents escape the country.

These are just a few of the many Americans who lived through the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Their stories are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of hope in the face of adversity.
