The June Bug

Flying Boats and Transatlantic Flights

Curtiss's interest in seaplanes led him to develop the flying boat, which was a hybrid between an airplane and a boat. Flying boats were ideal for long-distance travel over water, and Curtiss envisioned using them for transatlantic flights.

In 1919, Curtiss flew a modified flying boat named the NC-4 from Newfoundland to Lisbon, Portugal, becoming the first person to cross the Atlantic Ocean by air. This groundbreaking flight demonstrated the potential of aviation for long-distance travel.
