Reynolds-Lewis was born in 1964 to a black father and a white mother. She grew up in a small town in Ohio, where she was the only black child in her school. From a young age, she was aware of the differences between herself and her white peers, and she often felt like an outsider.
As she got older, Reynolds-Lewis began to experience more overt forms of racism. She was called names, threatened, and even physically attacked. These experiences left her feeling scared, angry, and confused. She didn't understand why people hated her simply because of the color of her skin.
Eventually, Reynolds-Lewis decided to leave her hometown and start a new life for herself. She moved to New York City, where she hoped to find a more accepting community. However, she soon realized that racism was just as prevalent in the city as it was in her small town.
Reynolds-Lewis spent many years struggling with her identity. She felt like she didn't belong anywhere. She was too black for the white world, but she was also too white for the black world. She felt lost and alone.
Finally, in her mid-thirties, Reynolds-Lewis began to heal from the wounds of racism. She started to embrace her own unique identity, and she found a community of people who loved and accepted her for who she was.
The Distance Between Us is a powerful and moving memoir that explores the complex issues of race, identity, and belonging. Reynolds-Lewis's story is a reminder that racism is still a very real problem in our society, but it is also a story of hope and resilience.
