In the annals of American history, the Battle of Little Bighorn stands as one of the most famous and tragic events. Fought on June 25, 1876, between the 7th Cavalry Regiment led by George Armstrong Custer and a coalition of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors led by Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, the battle resulted in the deaths of Custer and all but a handful of his men.

In his unforgettable book Son of the Morning Star, Evan S. Connell tells the story of the Battle of Little Bighorn from the perspectives of both the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors and the U.S. soldiers. Connell's vivid prose and meticulous research bring to life the people, events, and emotions of this iconic battle.

Connell begins his narrative with the departure of the 7th Cavalry Regiment from Fort Abraham Lincoln in May 1876. He follows Custer and his men as they march through the Dakota Territory, searching for the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors who had been raiding white settlements. Connell describes the tensions between Custer and his superiors, as well as the growing sense of unease among the soldiers as they approached the Little Bighorn River.

On the morning of June 25, 1876, Custer and his men crossed the Little Bighorn River and attacked a large camp of Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. The battle that ensued was one of the most brutal and bloody in American history. Connell describes the fighting in graphic detail, sparing no detail of the carnage that took place.

In the end, Custer and all but a handful of his men were killed. The Sioux and Cheyenne warriors were victorious, but their victory came at a great cost. The Battle of Little Bighorn was a turning point in the Indian Wars, and it helped to shape the course of American history.

Son of the Morning Star is an unforgettable account of one of the most famous and tragic battles in American history. Connell's vivid prose and meticulous research bring to life the people, events, and emotions of this iconic battle. Son of the Morning Star is a must-read for anyone interested in American history, military history, or Native American history.
