De Beauvoir's memoir is a candid and unflinching account of her childhood and adolescence in a bourgeois French family. She describes her early years as a happy time, filled with love and laughter. However, as she grows older, she begins to realize that her mother is not the perfect woman she once thought she was. Her mother is often cold and critical, and she seems to have little interest in her daughter's life.
As de Beauvoir enters adulthood, she struggles to come to terms with her mother's shortcomings. She tries to please her mother, but she always feels like she is falling short. Eventually, she comes to the realization that she must break free from her mother's influence in Free Download to find her own identity.
