Long Suffering: The Trials, Tribulations, and Triumphs of a Mets, Jets, and Rangers Fan
Being a fan of the New York Mets, Jets, and Rangers is not for the faint of heart. These three teams have combined for over 150 years of futility, heartbreak, and disappointment. But through it all, their fans have remained loyal, passionate, and hopeful.
In "Long Suffering," author Bill Madden tells the story of these three long-suffering fan bases. He traces their histories, from the early days of the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to the present day. He profiles some of the greatest players to ever wear their uniforms, from Mickey Mantle to Joe Namath to Mike Piazza. And he chronicles the many disappointments and failures that have made these teams so endearing to their fans.

Madden writes with a deep understanding of the sports fan experience. He knows the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. He knows what it's like to wait years for a championship, only to see your team come up short. But he also knows that being a fan is about more than just winning and losing. It's about community, camaraderie, and shared experiences.
"Long Suffering" is a must-read for any fan of New York sports. It's a funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring story about what it means to be a true fan.
The Mets
The New York Mets were founded in 1962, as part of the National League expansion that also brought the Houston Colt .45s (later Astros) into the fold. The Mets were an immediate laughingstock, losing 120 games in their first season. But they quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to their lovable losers persona and their home games at the iconic Shea Stadium.
The Mets finally won their first World Series in 1969, against the Baltimore Orioles. It was one of the most improbable championships in sports history, as the Mets had never finished above fifth place in their previous seven seasons. But they caught fire in the playoffs, and they defeated the heavily favored Orioles in five games.
The Mets have won two more World Series titles, in 1986 and 2015. But they have also had their share of disappointments. They lost the World Series in 1973, 1988, and 2000. And they have endured several long stretches of futility, including a 17-year playoff drought from 1988 to 2005.
But despite all the ups and downs, Mets fans have remained loyal. They are one of the most passionate fan bases in baseball, and they always believe that their team can win it all.
The Jets
The New York Jets were founded in 1960, as part of the American Football League expansion. They were an immediate success, winning the AFL championship in their first season. But they have struggled to maintain that level of success in the years since.
The Jets have won one Super Bowl, in 1969. But they have also lost four Super Bowls, in 1968, 1982, 1998, and 2010. And they have endured several long stretches of futility, including a 12-year playoff drought from 1992 to 2004.
But Jets fans have never given up on their team. They are one of the most passionate fan bases in football, and they always believe that their team can win it all.
The Rangers
The New York Rangers were founded in 1926, as one of the original six teams in the National Hockey League. They were an immediate success, winning the Stanley Cup in their first season. But they have struggled to maintain that level of success in the years since.
The Rangers have won four Stanley Cups, in 1928, 1933, 1940, and 1994. But they have also lost six Stanley Cup Finals, in 1929, 1937, 1972, 1979, 1994, and 2014. And they have endured several long stretches of futility, including a 25-year Stanley Cup drought from 1940 to 1964.
But Rangers fans have never given up on their team. They are one of the most passionate fan bases in hockey, and they always believe that their team can win it all.
Being a fan of the New York Mets, Jets, and Rangers is not for the faint of heart. But it is a rewarding experience. These teams have brought their fans some of the greatest moments in sports history. And they have also taught them the value of perseverance, resilience, and hope.
If you are a fan of New York sports, then you need to read "Long Suffering." It is a funny, heartbreaking, and ultimately inspiring story about what it means to be a true fan.
