Eva and Miriam's childhood in Transylvania was abruptly shattered when they were torn from their home and sent to Auschwitz, the notorious Nazi death camp. Upon arrival, they were subjected to a cruel and inhumane experiment conducted by the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele, known as the "Angel of Death." The twins, along with hundreds of other children, became unwitting participants in Mengele's twisted experiments, enduring painful injections and blood extractions.
Surviving the Unthinkable
Throughout their ordeal, Eva and Miriam clung fiercely to each other, finding solace and strength in their unwavering bond. Despite the unimaginable horrors they witnessed, they never lost hope, their spirits buoyed by the belief that they would survive and reunite with their family.
In 1945, after enduring a torturous year at Auschwitz, Eva and Miriam were miraculously liberated by Soviet forces. Emaciated and traumatized, they embarked on a harrowing journey to return home. Along the way, they learned that their parents had been murdered in the gas chambers.
A Life Dedicated to Healing and Education
Determined to find meaning in the wake of such unspeakable loss, Eva and Miriam dedicated their lives to sharing their story with the world. In 1978, Eva founded CANDLES (Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors),an organization that provides support and resources to Holocaust survivors and educates the public about the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.
Eva became a tireless advocate for forgiveness and reconciliation, believing that hatred only breeds more hatred. She traveled extensively, sharing her story with students, community groups, and world leaders. Her message resonated with countless individuals, inspiring a deeper understanding of the horrors of the Holocaust and the importance of tolerance and human connection.
Miriam, on the other hand, chose to focus on her personal healing and family. She lived a quiet life in Israel, raising a family and devoting herself to her loved ones. Despite the trauma she endured, Miriam remained a source of strength and love for her children and grandchildren.
A Legacy of Resilience and Hope
Eva Mozes Kor passed away in 2019 at the age of 85. Her legacy as a Holocaust survivor, advocate for peace, and founder of CANDLES continues to inspire countless people around the world. Miriam Mozes passed away in 2016 at the age of 81, leaving behind a family that cherishes her memory and the indomitable spirit she displayed throughout her life.
The story of Eva and Miriam Mozes is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love and compassion in the face of unimaginable adversity. Their story serves as a warning against the dangers of hatred and intolerance, and a testament to the transformative power of forgiveness and reconciliation.
