Summers' Early Life and Career

Lawrence Summers was born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1954. He is the son of Robert Summers, a Nobel Prize-winning economist, and Anita Summers, a social worker. Summers attended Harvard College, where he studied economics and mathematics. He then earned a PhD in economics from Harvard University.

After completing his PhD, Summers worked as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley. He also served as the chief economist of the World Bank from 1991 to 1993. In 1993, Summers was appointed Undersecretary for International Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury. In this role, he played a key role in the negotiations that led to the creation of the World Trade Organization.

Summers' Presidency at Harvard University

In 2001, Summers was appointed president of Harvard University. He was the first Jewish president of the university and the youngest person to hold the position in over a century.

Summers' presidency was marked by controversy. He was criticized for his outspoken views on race and gender, and for his willingness to challenge the status quo. He also faced criticism for his handling of several high-profile scandals, including the sexual harassment case involving former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz.

Despite the controversies, Summers also made significant progress during his presidency. He oversaw the largest fundraising campaign in Harvard's history, and he initiated a number of important academic reforms. He also appointed a record number of women and minorities to faculty positions.

Summers' Legacy

Lawrence Summers' legacy is complex and controversial. He was a brilliant economist and a visionary leader who made significant contributions to Harvard University. However, he was also a polarizing figure who often made controversial statements. His presidency was marked by both progress and controversy.

This book provides an unprecedented look at Summers' presidency and the battles he fought for the future of Harvard University. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of higher education or the life of one of its most controversial figures.
