Gertrude Baskerville was a Canadian conservationist and naturalist who played a pivotal role in the establishment and protection of Algonquin Park. Born in Toronto in 1883, Baskerville developed a love of nature at a young age. She spent her summers exploring the forests and lakes of Algonquin Park, and she became an avid canoeist and hiker.

In the early 1900s, Algonquin Park was under threat from logging and mining interests. Baskerville and other conservationists fought to protect the park, and in 1913, Algonquin Park was established as a provincial park. Baskerville continued to work to protect the park throughout her life, and she was instrumental in the establishment of the Algonquin Park Museum and the Algonquin Park Interpretive Centre.

Baskerville was also a talented writer and photographer. She wrote several books about Algonquin Park, including The Lady of Algonquin Park (1948) and Algonquin: A Wilderness Remembered (1964). Her photographs of the park are now part of the collection of the Algonquin Park Museum.

Gertrude Baskerville died in 1979 at the age of 96. She is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of Algonquin Park. Her work helped to protect the park for future generations, and her writings and photographs continue to inspire people to appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

Legacy

Gertrude Baskerville's legacy is one of conservation and stewardship. She helped to protect Algonquin Park from the threats of logging and mining, and she worked to ensure that the park would be enjoyed by future generations. Her writings and photographs have helped to educate people about the importance of conservation, and her work continues to inspire people to protect the natural world.

In 1983, the Algonquin Park Museum established the Gertrude Baskerville Award. The award is given annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the protection and promotion of Algonquin Park.

Gertrude Baskerville's legacy is one of inspiration and hope. She showed us that one person can make a difference, and she encouraged us all to do our part to protect the natural world.
